Extinct water pig named after Mick Jagger because of 'mobile and tactile' lips

An extinct water pig has been named after Mick Jagger.

The Rolling Stones singer has had the honour of providing the inspiration for the 19-million-year-old anthracotheres' name because the animal had 'tactile' lips.

The creature, which was recently discovered in Egypt through fragments of a fossilised jaw, has been named Jaggermeryx naida.

Associate professor at Wake University Ellen Miller co-authored the paper about the water pig, which was published in the Journal of Palaeontology.

She said: "I'm a huge Stones fan, [and the creature's] highly innervated muzzle with mobile and tactile lips [reminded her of Jagger].

"We imagine [the animal's] lifestyle was like that of a water deer, standing in water and foraging for plants along the river bank."
