Joel Madden sees similarities between Good Charlotte and 5 Seconds of Summer

Joel Madden reckons 5 Seconds of Summer are similar to Good Charlotte when they were first breaking into the mainstream.

The US star - who helped write 'Amnesia' for the Australians alongside brother Benji - told the Metro that the young pop-punk quartet share the same ethos his old band Good Charlotte.

He said: "There was only one Good Charlotte. We were a weird band. The way we looked and sounded had a disconnect, we were kind of angry and kind of happy, kind of ironic.

"What I loved about Good Charlotte was that we were really honest. As many records as we sold, we were never selling anything to anyone - we just did what we believed in. 5 Seconds of Summer remind me of us on our first record.

"We're from the same kind of place and they're like how we were then - they just want to make records, want to tour and see everything. We loved them before we even worked with them because we could see they were just like us."

Good Charlotte meanwhile released their self-titled debut album in 2000.
