Gerard Way on solo music: 'My label were like, 'we can't sell this, he's become too happy!''

Former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has opened up about his new musical direction and confessed that his label, Warner Bros, were a little unsure of how it would be received when they first heard it.

During a new interview with Kerrang! magazine, the rocker admitted that some people were surprised by his new sound and his label weren't sure how fans would react to his 'happier' style

"Me doing fun stuff freaked people out. Some people almost recoiled from the more fun songs. Like, 'God, we can't sell this stuff! He's become happy! What are we gonna do?!' The best part of this whole record is that I never really started making music seriously," he claims. "I think that’s what I liked about it."

He went onto add that recording his debut solo album, which is called 'Hesitant Alien', was a great process because he didn't take it too seriously and just enjoyed what he was doing as he was doing it:

"I never thought about what I was doing. I never thought, ‘What's this going to mean to somebody?' And thank God I didn’t take it too seriously, because it was fun just sitting there and plugging in the fuzz pedals and trying stuff out. I think that's kinda when I'm making my best music. Like, with 'The Black Parade', I was laughing the whole time. I didn't take any of that seriously. I thought it was super-funny."

The star also recently announced details of a UK headlining tour that will kick off in November. Tickets are now on sale and the full schedule is as follows:

  • November 5 - Manchester Ritz
  • November 6 - Oxford O2 Academy
  • November 7 - Glasgow ABC
