Joseph Kahn on Taylor Swift's 'Blank Space' video concept: 'Maybe she's the problem in relationships'

Acclaimed music video director Joseph Kahn has opened up about Taylor Swift's brand new music video for 'Blank Space' and confessed that the concept behind it was Swift's failed relationships and the idea that the problem might actually be her as opposed to the guys she dates

Speaking to Mashable, Kahn (Eminem ft. Rihanna's 'Love The Way You Lie', Britney Spears' 'Perfume') explained: "She's highly aware of one particular thing that's happening right now — the idea that if you date her and you break up with her, she's going to write a song about you. She's aware of this. She's not an idiot."

"Taylor wanted to make a video addressing this concept of, if she has so many boys breaking up with her maybe the problem isn't the boy, maybe the problem is her."

Kahn went onto add that they wanted to approach this idea with humour and she was very hands-on with everything that went into the final clip:

"We wanted to make a very funny version of this, that Taylor is the nightmare. She was very thorough: She came up with concepts, imagery and references. When you have an artists wanting to test her imaging, it's always great territory to be in."

Swift's ex-boyfriend Harry Styles, meanwhile, recently admitted that having songs written about him by her isn't too terrible as she's very talented so at least the material is great: “We write from personal experience, and I think everyone does, so it would be hypocritical of us to be like, 'Oh you can’t write about us,' And she's really good, so they’re good songs. So I’m really lucky in that sense."
