One Direction and Katy Perry dominate AMAs

One Direction and Katy Perry were the big winners at this year's American Music Awards.

The ceremony took place on Sunday (November 23) in Los Angeles and a host of big names were honoured.

One Direction went home with three gongs - Artist of the Year, Favourite Band, Duo or Group and Favourite Album in the Pop/Rock category.

Katy Perry meanwhile won Favourite Pop/Rock Female Artist, Favourite Adult Contemporary Artist and Single of the Year ('Dark Horse').

Other winners included Iggy Azalea, who bagged the Favourite Artist and Favourite Album prizes in the Rap/Hip-Hop section, whilst 5 Seconds of Summer won New Artist of the Year.

Speaking about one of One Direction's wins, singer Liam Payne said on the night:

"This is so amazing, I can't believe we've won three and one of them is Artist of the Year. It's amazing because we've worked so hard on these last two albums, I mean we spent a lot of time writing the music and going down and really trying our hardest to really improve and make the music better and better."
