Michael Stipe performs first full solo gig since leaving REM

Michael Stipe has performed his debut full solo gig.

The singer's former band REM split in 2011, but he played a surprise slot in New York on Monday (December 29).

He supported Patti Smith at the city's Webster Hall and played six songs.

His set included the REM tracks 'New Test Leper' and 'Saturn Return' as well as four covers.

Stipe ran through Frank Sinatra’s 'New York, New York’, Vic Chesnutt’s ‘Lucinda Williams', Patti Smith’s ‘Wing’ and Perfume Genius’ 'Hood'.

The singer meanwhile recently confirmed that REM will never reunite.
