Tom Petty won't receive Grammy for Sam Smith's 'Stay With Me'

The Grammys have confirmed that Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne won't receive awards if Sam Smith's 'Stay With Me' wins at this year's ceremony.

As previously reported, the two musicians are now official co-writers on the 2014 song after Smith reached a settlement with them.

They have been added to the credits after similarities between the the chorus of their 1989 song 'Won't Stand Down' and 'Stay With Me' were noted.

Smith's song is nominated for the Song of the Year Grammy, which recognises the track's writers.

However, the Recording Academy have told Billboard that Petty and Lynne wouldn't receive a Grammy if the tune won.

Senior vice president Bill Freimuth said: "Since Lynne and Petty didn't do any new writing for this work, we are considering their original work to have been interpolated by Napier, Phillips and Smith for 'Stay With Me'.

"Lynne and Petty will not be considered nominees nor will they be considered Grammy recipients, should the song win. Rather, they would be given certificates to honour their participation in the work, just as any other writers of sampled or interpolated work."

This year's Grammy Awards are taking place on February 8 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
