Patricia Arquette 'surprised' by Oscars speech criticism

Patricia Aquette has revealed her surprise at receiving criticism for speaking about wage equality at the Oscars.

The 46-year-old won the Best Supporting Actress prize at the ceremony in late February for her role in Boyhood.

Speaking as she collected the award, the actress said: "To every woman who gave birth, to every citizen and taxpayer, it's our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America."

However, some called Arquette's thoughts on the subject ill-informed.

Speaking in a new interview with the Hollywood Reporter, the actress said:

"There's always going to be [haters] and I think people didn't really think of what I was saying clearly and understand and look at the impact.

"I think I was a little bit [surprised]. I mean, it's crazy that we don't, that women don't have equal pay in America."
