John Legend worried 'Blurred Lines' ruling could be 'slippery slope'

John Legend has voiced his concern over the recent 'Blurred Lines' plagiarism ruling.

As previously reported, a jury earlier this month ruled that Robin Thicke's 2013 song - which was co-written by Pharrell Williams and TI - copied Gaye's 1977 track 'Got To Give It All'.

$7.3m (£4.8m) in damages is due to be given to Gaye's family.

Speaking at the SXSW Festival in Austin this weekend, John Legend admitted that the ruling could hamper the music industry's creativity in the future.

He said: "You have to be careful when it comes to copyrights, whether just sounding like or feeling like something is enough to say you violated their copyrights.

"Because there's a lot of music out there, and there's a lot of things that feel like other things that are influenced by other things. And you don't want to get into that thing where all of us are suing each other all the time because this and that song feels like another song."

Legend added: "I think we have to be careful about that, and I'm a little concerned that this verdict might be a slippery slope."
