Shawn Mendes on fans: 'The support is really there now and it's amazing'

Canadian heartthrob Shawn Mendes appeared on 'Good Morning America' this morning (April 17) to perform 'Stitches' and opened up about the success he is enjoying with the release of his debut album, 'Handwritten'.

The star was asked if he ever expected to receive so much attention and acclaim, and he confessed that all he ever set out to do was just make music that he enjoyed so anything else is a huge bonus and having a chart-topping record is a dream come true:

"Not in a million years! I had no expectations of anything and I just put it ('Handwritten') out... I didn't expect to have a No.1 album."

He then opened up about joining Taylor Swift's '1989' tour as her support act and admitted that he's very excited, but the size of the venues they will be playing is intimidating: "It's crazy, I cant believe it. It's a stadium tour so i'll be standing in front of 70,000 people. I'll be very nervous."

Referring to his dedicated fan base, Mendes added that he's so touched by the support they've been showing him: "It's amazing - it's cool, the support is really there now and it's exciting to have that beside me."

During a recent interview with radio station 99.7, the singer was asked if he ever gets annoyed by all the screaming his fans do when he sings and replied: "No, but sometimes in the middle of a slow song you hear vulgar things being shouted out! I've actually been pretty lucky (no one has ever thrown vulgar things onto the stage)."
