Nick Grimshaw: 'Zayn would have resented staying in 1D'

Radio presenter Nick Grimshaw is the latest star to weigh in on Zayn Malik's untimely departure from boyband One Direction and confessed that it must have been tough to walk away from such an incredible career.

Speaking to Heat magazine, the BBC Radio 1 presenter explained that while he was upset to hear the news, he thinks Malik made a brave decision by following his heart because there's nothing worse than having to do something you no longer love:

"I was distraught... If Zayn doesn't want to do it, he doesn't want to do it. I respect him for it, because if he's not happy, he shouldn't be in the band because he'll resent it. People smell a rat a mile away in music, and if you don't believe in it people don't buy into it. One Direction have been successful because they're themselves."

When asked if he has seen Malik since he quit One Direction in March, Grimshaw added: "I've really not, no. They've been on tour and they haven't been on the show. Of course [I'm mates with them]. I only really know Harry, but I know the others to say hi to."
