Shawn Mendes: 'I'd have been too shy to perform in the street'

Canadian sensation Shawn Mendes has opened up about using video sharing app Vine to raise his profile and revealed that it was the only method that he felt confident enough to expose his talent through because he gets nervous easily

17-year-old Mendes explained to Nightline that the best thing about his rise to fame is experiencing a whole crowd of people singing his lyrics back to him on stage: "It's the best thing. There's no other feeling like having your fans singing your songs back to you."

When asked if he thinks he would have enjoyed the same success without using social media platform Vine, Mendes admitted that he probably wouldn't have been confident enough to show off his music skills in any other way:

"To be honest with you, I don't think I would have had the confidence to step out in the street and sing something. I was just so intrigued by the fact that someone could take a popular song and make it their own, and that people could make it more than the original."
