Earlier this month, Justin Bieber revealed that he had no idea who singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes was and the media started reporting that this was a low-key 'diss'. 

During an interview with iHeart Radio Music Festival, Mendes explained that Bieber not knowing who he was perfectly acceptable and he wasn't at all offended by that. He added that he was just excited when the fellow Canadian sensation gave him a shout out on Instagram and praised his vocal talent:

“It was really cool, really sweet of him. I was really happy. Obviously, people took that the wrong way, so it was really nice of him to do that.”

He also spoke to Nightline this week about launching his career from uploading Vine clips and revealed that he probably wouldn't have found the courage to busk or perform in the street, so it was a great platform to use: 

"To be honest with you, I don't think I would have had the confidence to step out in the street and sing something. I was just so intrigued by the fact that someone could take a popular song and make it their own, and that people could make it more than the original."
