Randy Jackson's protégé Wil talks exclusively to Pressparty

We recently caught up with international pop star Wil to talk about what it's like to be managed by the one and only Randy Jackson and what his journey has been like so far.

Born in Singapore, the songwriter and producer was discovered in Spain in 2012. Wil's known for his diversity in controversial pop music videos and diverse contributions to the music industry with his artistic team in Spain and Asia as a songwriter and producer.

He was nominated in the Hollywood Music In Media Awards 2014 for pop song "SMDH" representing as an Asian artist in the United States.

You just unveiled your music video for new single ‘What Are We Waiting For’. How did you come up with the concept? How involved in the project were you?

Life is about making the the best out of each moment and never waiting for something to happen. What are we waiting for is about that - the enjoyment of the moment. I am involved in every aspect of creativity because I love it. I wrote the song with DreZa and Jeff Blue. Randy Jackson and I wanted people who heard the song to have fun, and so did we have lots of fun in the studios creating the music and the music video. My vision is to empower.

Randy Jackson is your manager! How did you come to meet him and what’s the best advice he has given you, if any, so far?

When I first came to Los Angeles to record a music video of mine in downtown, Randy Jackson was also within vicinity of the studio. He asked if I could have a few of my songs sent to him and I agreed in a heartbeat while maintaining a cool front even though I was overly-excited in meeting him in person but didn't want to seem like a creep! A week later, I got a call from him. "Hi Wil, this is Randy Jackson". I thought it must have been a mistake but the presence and calming voice sounded just like the Randy Jackson I have seen on television (and I told him he was much better looking in person!) The greatest advice Randy has given me so far is through his actions instead of words. You see him enjoying and having fun all the time, and that was it - love what you do. He didn't even need to say it, people around him just instinctively pick it up from his presence! We laugh a lot all the time.

What inspired your lyrics for ‘What Are We Waiting For’?

When I first came to Los Angeles, I noticed that many people that I spoke to were always constantly "waiting" for something to happen. "Waiting for a call.." "waiting for the email" "waiting for the text.." It was rather apparent and I thought it was important to seize the moment and not wait for something to happen because life's so incredible when you're able to take the best out of each moment and spark a magic out of it. If you feel a certain way about someone, share it with them. I think it is bravery and even if it does not come back the way you wish it would be, it teachers you how to love yourself before loving others.

If you could duet with anyone on the music scene at the moment, who would it be and why?

If I get to have a duet with Sia, I would go nuts. Her artistry is just contagiously awesome. Her music empowers those who feel down - and that's good, because it is okay to feel down, but it is important to ask yourself why and be brave about the down times.

Are there any particular themes you gravitate towards when you’re writing songs?

I tend to gravitate towards songs that uplift, yes we love a sad breakup but there has to be a good thing about it. I mean, that really means you get to be the total you right?

What has been the most memorable moment of your journey to date?

A friend of mine told me I have to meet this girl who had a cardiac arrest and was in a coma for several months who woke up later. He told me we'd connect right away. He was right. Her newly wed husband was told to pull the plug on her but he kept saying he has nothing left and he will give it a try. On his birthday, she woke up from the coma, but lost the ability to read and some of her memory.

When my friend told me she was a really sarcastic and funny girl, I wanted to meet her. When we first met, we clicked right away, her ability converse was just incredible and she was a really hilarious and beautiful woman inside out. When we went out for a drink (yes I did seek consent from her husband) and she was just cracking up jokes. A man came up to her and starting tearing up. He said he saw her at the hospital with her husband and they were all praying for her to wake up, and that her waking up during her husband's birthday was a miracle." She then smiled and told us, I think my husband was the one who has really been in the coma, I have been asleep all these while, but he had to see me having cardiac arrest- try to resuscitate me when I would not wake up, take care of me throughout these years for me to be where I am again today. This was the most memorable moment of my journey to date.

You have a huge social media presence with over 440,000 followers. How important is staying connected to you? Have you experienced anything unpleasant online? Any advice for people who may be dealing with cyber-bullying?

It is the simplest way for my fans and I to share our thoughts together. Cyberbullying will always be apparent because it is easy for people to hurt other anonymously. If someone who does not mean much to you says something nasty, i always ask myself "would they say these kind of things to their loved ones?" and most of the time even when people say something hurtful to me I just say thank you, at least you're being honest, and you'd be surprised by their reaction where they actually hear what they say to others and are embarrassed about it. Don't treat cyberbullying seriously.

What’s next for you? What can we look forward to from you in the near future/next year?

I'm really excited that we're preparing some new singles with Randy guiding me in my creative direction. I will be touring around the USA and I really look forward to connecting with all of you in person soon.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I am listening to Sia's 'Bird Set Free'. Sia, see ya?
