Lady Gaga and Sam Smith among the winnners at Golden Globes

Lady Gaga and Sam Smith were among the winners at this year's Golden Globe awards.

The former picked up the Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries prize for her role in American Horror Story: Hotel.

Her part of the Countess was her first recurring role in TV acting.

She said during her acceptance speech at Sunday's (January 10) ceremony: "I feel like Cher in that movie Moonstruck right now.

"It's one of the greatest moments of my life. I have to thank [American Horror Story: Hotel producer] Ryan Murphy. You have believed in me so much, you've been such a great friend."

"I could go through the entire cast because you're all so talented. Because of you, I was able to shine, I guess. I wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer, but music worked out first…I'm speechless, thank you so much!"

Sam Smith's Spectre theme 'Writing's On The Wall' meanwhile bagged the Best Original Song award.

He said on stage: "I genuinely didn’t think we were going to get this."

Other winners on the night included The Revenant in the Best motion picture (drama) category and Jennifer Lawrence in the Best performance by an actress in a motion picture (drama).

Leonardo DiCaprio won the accompanying male prize for his part in The Revenant.
