David Bowie set for first No. 1 album on Billboard 200 with 'Blackstar'

The late David Bowie is heading for his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 albums chart with his latest masterpiece, 'Blackstar'.

The album was released last week on January 8 (Bowie's 69th birthday), and is estimated to sell up to 130,000 albums in the week ending January 14, as well as debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart on January 30.

The legendary superstar passed away on Sunday, January 10, following a prolonged 18-month battle with liver cancer.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

The top 10 of the new January 30, 2016-dated Billboard 200 chart will be revealed on Billboard on Sunday, January 17.

Blackstar's total equivalent album unit figure for the week will be higher than 130,000, and will likely knock fellow British star Adele's '25' off the top spot.

In his lifetime, Bowie charted seven top 10 albums on the Billboard 200. His highest-charting album was his last album, 'The Next Day' in 2013, which debuted and peaked at No. 2.

He previously reached the top 10 with:

  • 'Let's Dance' (No. 4, 1983)
  • 'Changesonebowie' (No. 10, 1976)
  • 'Station to Station' (No. 3, 1976)
  • 'Young Americans' (No. 9, 1975)
  • 'David Live' (No. 8, 1974)
  • 'Diamond Dogs' (No. 5, 1974)
