James Corden nearly turned down hosting The Late Late Show

James Corden has admitted that he nearly turned down the offer to host The Late Late Show.

In a recent interview with the website, Mr. Porter, the British star talks candidly about his career decision and moving from Britain to Los Angeles.

Corden took over as the host of The Late Late Show last March, replacing Scottish star Craig Ferguson. He had previously appeared in the British comedies Teachers and Gavin & Stacey, and hosted the famous BRIT Awards.

However, it was his performance in the hit Broadway play One Man, Two Guvnors that caught the attention of CBS CEO, Leslie Moonves and then company president, Nina Tassler. Corden was approached by them to replace Ferguson, but he was reluctant to accept, as he was writing a sitcom for HBO and planning to return to Broadway.

He explained that it was fellow Brit Piers Morgan who eventually convinced him to take the job.

"I was so convinced it wouldn't work," he said. "I mean, I've never hosted a chat show before. I'm not a stand-up. I'm not even a sketch comedian."

Corden was so unknown in the States when he started hosting the show, that when he started work at CBS’ studios in Los Angeles and forgot his security pass once, the guard on duty initially refused to let him back in.

The Late Late Show with James Corden has worked, though, and since produced a popular recurring segment, Carpool Karaoke, in which the host sings in a car with well-known singers. Past guests have included Sir Elton John, Adele, Jennifer Hudson, Justin Bieber, One Direction, Mariah Carey and Coldplay.

The Late Late Show with James Corden receives an average nightly audience of 1 million viewers.

Corden’s contract was recently extended to five years.
