Sam Smith proudly takes home Oscar for Best Original Song

Sam Smith won the Best Original Song at this year's Oscars.

The singer and writer Jimmy Napes bagged the gong for the song 'Writing's On The Wall', which acted as the theme to the 2015 James Bond film Spectre.

Smith used his acceptance speech at Sunday's (February 28) event to pay tribute to the LGBT community.

He said: "I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope we can all stand together as equals one day."

The Brit beat off competition from the likes of Lady Gaga and The Weeknd.

It means the last two Bond themes have won the award, with Adele snapping it up in 2012 for 'Skyfall'.

Smith also performed on the night, as did Gaga and The Weeknd.

Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl performed a special version of The Beatles 'Blackbird' over a video montage of late stars.

Elsewhere at the ceremony, Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar for his role in The Revenant.

He bagged the Best Actor prize and raised the issue of climate change during his speech.

Spotlight won the coveted Best Picture prize.
