No one wanted Florence Welch

Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine has revealed that despite recruiting Mairead Nash of DJ duo Queens of Noise as her manager and opening for MGMT early in her career, she couldn’t find any record company to sign her.

Speaking to the LA Times, Welch recounted her entry into the music business from chaotic childhood to art school to drunken open-mic nights to a serendipitous meeting with her future manager in a nightclub toilet.

After seeing the singer perform, Nash decided to come on as her manager: "It was like an instinct reaction," said Nash. "I knew it was the right thing to do. She's an amazing lyricist. There is something about the way she sings, it captures people. It's scary sometimes when you hear her."

Despite such endorsements, Welch was still to spend more time under the radar: "It was like two years of finding the right band and trying to figure out what sound it was [and] we weren't making any money,” she explained. “My dad was my tour manager and we did the MGMT tour in a camper van. There was a six-month period of no one wanting to sign us."
