The Northernettes chat to Pressparty about 'The Voice' and more

We recently sat down for a chat with 3-piece group The Northernettes, who came together after appearing on different seasons of The Voice UK, and they opened up about their beginnings, their incredible sense of style and their unique sound.

So you came together after appearing on The Voice! How did that come about?

Katie: I watched Sophie and Georgia on The Voice because they were on the season after me and I loved their style and vibe, so I reached out to them on Twitter and we decided to meet up. Sophie and I listen to pretty similar music, and me and Georgia both have vintage shops, and it turned out that we all had a lot in common. So we decided to get in to a studio and a rehearsal room and and the magic just happened and here we are.

What drove you to apply to be on The Voice to begin with? What was it about that particular show?

Sophie: I didn’t apply! I used to have singing lessons in the first year of college and I was really shy, so my teacher sent me to auditions to improve my confidence, so she put me forward for this one and she was being really funny about it and not telling me what it was about, so I went along and sang in this hotel in front of two people and was like ‘…OK’, and then I got a call like 3 weeks later like ‘Congratulations, you’re through to the next round of The Voice' and I was just like, ‘What? Really? Is this a joke’?

Georgia: I didn’t even really believe I was on the show till I was on the live shows. I’d gone through it all for 6 months because of all the behind the scenes part and stages, but it wasn’t until I was picked to be in the Final 3 for Tom that I was like ‘OH. I’m going to be on TV, I’m going to have to look into this a bit more’, because I didn’t expect anything and I was so surprised.

Do you think shows like that are useful for aspiring artist?

Georgia: It’s definitely a platform.

Sophie: I think it depends on how hard you’re willing to work, because if you just expect everything after, you’re not going to get it. The show was a great platform for us as we’re willing to work hard and get where we want to be.

Describe your musical style (which we love, by the way - it’s so cool!)

Georgia: It’s very quirky, fun, bubbly, retro, mad, vintage. It’s always fun, even when we’re serious, or sing a song that has a deeper meaning, it’s still a load of fun, the creative process is still interesting. The music is special and unique.

Sophie: Colourful, a bundle of colour.

Who are you influenced and inspired by, if anyone?

Georgia: We’re definitely inspired by the 60s and all those great girl bands of that era.

Can we talk about your personal style? Your fashion style?! We are so into it. What’s your go-to accessory? Is it a bold lip? A particular hair style?

Georgia: Socks! Pop socks. I don’t like my feet, I feel safe when I have socks on when I’m on stage. Mine’s definitely socks, if I’m on stage without them I feel like I’ve forgotten something, or like I don’t have my pants on.

Katie: A hat.

Sophie: A kimono.

As women in music, how do you feel about the sexism in the industry? Have you encountered any struggles?

Sophie: No, I don’t think we have. We’re completely different to anything else. We dress how we want to dress.

Georgia: I think the market for females in the industry is massive, there’s a lot of competition. But instead of focusing on other bands and what they’re doing, we focus on what we like as a style and what we want to do. Yeah, we dress in what makes us confidence. We’re not trying to fit in, we’re just being ourselves.

What are you listening to at the moment? Any particular artists or songs you can’t stop playing?

Sophie: I’ve been listening to every single Kate Bush album on repeat for the past 2 weeks.

Georgia: I’ve been listening to a lot Jools Holland.

What’s coming up for you this year?

Sophie: We’re working on our second single, it’s a quirky and fun song.

Georgia: It really cements who we are as a band, it’s absolutely mad.
