Troye Sivan on the importance of representing the LGBT community in media

Aussie singer Troye Sivan has revealed that it's important to represent the LGBT community in popular culture because it helps people to feel like what they're going through or what they're experiencing is something that other people are also going through.

During a chat with Attitude magazine, the young star explained that he can remember watching two male characters kissing on a television programme and that memory has really stuck in his mind:

“When I was younger I saw two boys kissing on TV or something like that and I frantically changed the channel. It was really scary but just goes to show how important good representation in the media is because I remember those moments clearly.”

Sivan went onto add that watching that moment unfold on TV helped him to feel less alone: “Obviously, they were terrifying because they were confronting that I had to suddenly think about that but at the time it was so comforting to know, ‘At least there are some people in the world like this, like me.'”
