Garbage's Shirley Manson: 'Women face double standards online'

Garbage will release their new album 'Strange Little Birds' on June 10 and frontwoman Shirley Manson has opened up about the perils of social media in a new interview.

Speaking to Nylon magazine, Manson admitted that it's so tough to be a woman where social media is concerned because they are quick to get shot down when they show skin, but they also get told that flashing the flesh is empowering so there is a very mixed message about how to present yourself online:

"I feel really passionate about being a voice out there that is the opposite of what we're being told by the media - that taking our clothes off on social media is empowering."

"Now I'm not saying that you cannot enjoy your naked body - you absolutely should! But be aware that there will be consequences. I wish women could walk down the street naked and never be under threat, but it's highly unlikely that will ever happen."
