Maddie and Tae on 'Sierra' inspiration: 'She was a real girl who bullied people'

Country duo Maddie and Tae have opened up about their new single 'Sierra' and revealed the inspiration behind the lyrics.

During a new interview with Billboard magazine, the pair explained that the track is about Maddie's experience of being picked on by a girl named Sierra:

“Sierra was this real girl who was just not nice. She was very belittling to myself and many other people. Everyone was kind of scared to stand up to her. She was that person that was so beautiful, and you know, everyone just kind of bowed down to her.”

Maddie went onto explain that she wasn't the only person to be bullied by Sierra, but there was one day that she was treated really poorly by her: "She had gotten all these girls to gang up against me, and so I went home crying that Friday."

Tae then told Billboard that when they got into the studio together that week, they knew it was time to write about this experience as it would be cathartic for Maddie, and the songwriter Aaron Scherz agreed: “Maddie and I had been talking about Sierra for maybe like a year, and he knew of her. So when it was finally time for us to write the song, he and me were just like, ‘OK, let’s do this. Let’s help Maddie heal.’ ”
