The Lumineers on fame after 'Ho Hey' release: 'It caught us a little off guard'

The Lumineers have opened up about being thrust into the spotlight with the release of their breakthrough single 'Ho Hey'.

The band's singer Wesley Schultz explained to The Guardian newspaper that their fast rise to fame 'caught them off guard' and was hard to come to terms with:

“I remember going back home to Denver after coming off of our tour and the globe was reacting to the music in a way we weren’t aware of because were in this bubble."

"A friend of mine was like, ‘What’s it like being in one of the biggest bands in the world?’ I thought he was joking, but then I realized he was actually serious. We were getting exposed to so much more of the world than we realized or were prepared for. It caught us a little off guard.”

He went onto add that being nominated for the Best New Artist prize at the 2013 GRAMMYs was strange because they had been doing music for some time before finding their place in the mass market:

“At first we were like, ‘New artist?’ It’s funny because when you look at that category it’s always bands who have been doing it for a while. You’re just new to the masses. f you listen to 'Ho Hey' or any song on our first album – if we wanted to write a hit, we wouldn’t have written those.”
