Madonna has opened the first in her new chain of Hard Candy gyms in Mexico City.

Crowds of fans turned up to see the 52-year-old pop star make an appearance and teach a short dance class to gym members.

"It's a sexy name that gives you the opportunity to have fun and to build strength as far as the imagination will allow," she said.

"Our plan is to use Mexico as a place to fine-tune our brand and then expand it to other countries," she added.

Gym membership at Hard Candy costs 2,000 pesos a month (£103) and the gym features a futuristic decor with graphics chosen by Madonna.
