Whoopi Goldberg on Selena Gomez's 'unauthentic' admission

Over the weekend, songstress Selena Gomez posted a message on Instagram that explained she has been feeling "unauthentic" and "unconnected" to herself and her art lately.

The message read: "Tonight I felt extremely unauthentic, unconnected to both my myself and my music. I've never really felt like my materials, wardrobe or a video could define me. I act on a moment and fear something that hasn't happened."

It concluded: "I'm stagnant, I stay still and don't just sit with myself first and ask, 'Is this where I am, whole heartedly?' I've always told the truth. I'm always true to my word, I've shown who I am but I need to rethink some areas of my life creatively and personally. Had to get that out."

This week, Whoopi Goldberg talked about Gomez's post while on air at The View and confessed that she doesn't think people should react that dramatically to the statement because this generation's obsession with transparency and over-sharing means that it's easy to speak without thinking about how you might feel after giving the issue some distance:

"I say, 'Selena, maybe you just had a bad night.' That happens. Because everything gets posted now and everybody responds to the posts. Some nights are like that where you're like, 'I feel like the biggest phony and I'm a bonehead.' Then you go to sleep, you wake up and you think, 'I'm so cute'."
