Franz Ferdinand add to tributes for rising Lapelles singer who died on 22nd birthday

Franz Ferdinand have paid tribute The Lapelles frontman Gary Watson who died after falling into water in Glasgow.

The promising Scottish indie band's mainman fell into the River Clyde at around 10pm on Saturday (August 13).

He was taken to hospital but he died on Sunday morning (August 14) - his 22nd birthday.

A host of tributes have come in from fellow musicians, with Franz Ferdinand writing on Twitter:

"We're so sad to hear of the tragic passing of @TheLapelles Gary Watson, a lovely, talented man. Thoughts are with his family, friends & band."

The Kooks wrote: "So so sad to hear the news about Gary @TheLapelles. We met a few weeks back when we played a show together. Great band and amazing energy."

Travis star Fran Healy added: "Totally heartbreaking news about the singer of @TheLapelles."

The Strypes meanwhile said: "We are truly sad to hear that Gary Watson from @TheLapelleshas died aged 22. Our condolences to his band mates, friends & family. RIP."

The band confirmed the tragic news on Facebook on Sunday, writing:

"It's with shock, heavy hearts and sadness that we have to let you know the news that Gary sadly passed away this morning as a result of injuries sustained in a tragic accident last night.

"Today was his 22nd birthday. We are lost for words and struggling to process such a tragedy. Gary was a creative force, a man who without his vision this band wouldn't exist. We have lost a friend, a brother, a hero. At the moment it doesn't seem real.

"We send our deepest condolences to Gary's family and would appreciate your respect in allowing them & us some peace whilst we grieve. Forever in our hearts, with peace you go. X."
