Niall Horan enjoyed low-key adventure during One Direction's hiatus

Singer Niall Horan, who recently unveiled his debut solo single "This Town", has opened up about what he has been doing since One Direction announced their collective decision to take a break last year.

He appeared on The Graham Norton Show this evening (October 14) and told the host that he spent the hiatus experiencing budget travel, which is something he has always been keen to do:

"I went backpacking around the world with my two cousins. I wanted to do it properly so we did it on a budget. All of my friends got to do it when I was traveling the world in a different way, so I thought it's only fair that I get to do it, too."

Horan went onto add that once he got back from his travels, he felt inspired to write new music and got back into songwriting: "When I got back from Asia I just started doing acoustic stuff—the stuff I grew up on—and thought, 'Maybe I should release them. They're actually not that bad."
