Shirley Manson to women in music: 'Have a longer career by keeping your panties on'

Shirley Manson, of Garbage fame, has revealed that it's perhaps unwise for female new music hopefuls to believe they have to keep their clothes to a minimum in order to make it in the industry because over-sexualisation can be such a negative thing.

She chatted to fellow music star Tori Amos for the Talkhouse Music podcast and explained that the focus on sexualisation is disappointing because it's sending out the wrong message to aspiring artists and perpetuating an unhealthy trend:

"I feel very frustrated and I keep wanting to say to the girls, 'Listen, you can have a longer career if you keep those panties on!' Unless you're really incredibly smart and brilliant, like Madonna was, with your sexuality, don't step into that pool."

"There's a few women who carry (it) off. I think Rihanna is incredibly sexual and it's exciting to me and powerful and somewhat threatening, and also intriguing. And somehow she manages to maintain that mystery by being incredibly sexual."
