Vinyl record sales overtake digital music sales in the UK for the first time

It has been revealed that sales of vinyl records have overtaken sales of digital music in the UK for the first time ever.

According to data reported by The Guardian newspaper, vinyl sales hit an impressive £2.4m last week compared with the £2.1m that was made from digital music purchases and, in comparison, this time last year vinyl sales were at £1.2m while digital sales were way ahead at £4.4m.

Kim Bayley, chief executive of the Entertainment Retailers Association, explained that the surge in sales is partly due to the wide availability of vinyl in the UK now: “The vast majority of releases are coming out in vinyl now. It used to be that only heritage acts or niche albums would come out as a record, but now everything does – pop albums, compilations, film soundtracks, all genres.”
