Shane MacGowan's mother has passed away after being involved in a fatal car crash on New Year's Day in Ireland.

The Pogues star's mum, who was nearly 90, died after her car hit a wall in County Tipperary. A post-mortem will be carried out on Monday (January 2) at the Limerick University Hospital.

Therese MacGowan's death came just days after her son enjoyed another royalties boost as The Pogues' classic track 'Fairytale of New York' received regular airplay at Christmas.
