Several high profile celebrities, including Sting, Robert Redford and Robert De Niro, have signed an open letter addressed to the Iranian government calling for the release of Sikineh Ashtiani.

Ashtiani was sentenced to death by stoning over alleged adultery earlier this year, but the sentence was delayed after an international outcry.

The mother of two has been receiving support the world over as both celebrities and politicians are urging Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to release her.

The letter – which appeared on the frontpage of The Times newspaper – states: "We, the undersigned, call on the government of Iran to release immediately Ms Ashtiani, her son Sajad Ghaderzade, and her lawyer, Javid Houtan Kian, from incarceration."
