Olly Murs "gutted" after ITV axes The Xtra Factor: 'Some of the best memories on that show'

ITV has confirmed plans to axe The Xtra Factor in favour of producing more digital content to replace it.

The show launched alongside The X Factor back in 2004 and has been hugely popular, but managing director of Thames TV Richard Holloway issued a statement explaining why it is now being taken off the air:

"In the past year there has been an increase in digital engagement and online audiences around The X Factor. In light of this, ITV's strategy to focus their efforts on digital means The Xtra Factor on linear television has come to its natural end. We've had great fun making the show and would like to thank Rylan, Matt and Roman (Kemp) for their fantastic and entertaining work on the last series. We now look forward to focusing on making great content for our social platforms in support of the main show."

Singer Olly Murs, who used to host Xtra Factor, confessed that the news came as a huge shock and he genuinely enjoyed presenting the show alongside his good friend Caroline Flack. He tweeted: "Awww what!!! Woke up to the news Xtra Factor is no more! Gutted! Some of the best memories on that show with Cazza & the crew!! #thatsright."
