Actor Sir John Hurt, Oscar nominated for the 'Elephant Man,' has died at the age of 77

Actor Sir John Hurt, Oscar nominated for his role in 'The Elephant Man,' and star of 'Harry Potter' and many more, has died at the age of 77. 

The movie star, who was treated for pancreatic cancer back in 2015, made an incredible name for himself on the silver screen and appeared in many movies from 'The Elephant Man' to the very recent 'Jackie', in which he played Father Richard McSorley. 

Author JK Rowling shared a tribute to Hurt on Twitter, writing: "So very sad to hear that the immensely talented and deeply beloved John Hurt has died. My thoughts are with his family and friends."

'The Lord of the Rings' star Elijah Wood wrote: "It was such an honor to have watched you work, sir." Stephen Fry added: "Oh no. What terrible news. We've lost #JohnHurt as great on the stage, small screen and big. A great man & great friend of Norfolk & #NCFC."
