Meryl Streep responds to Donald Trump's diss: “I am the most ‘overrated’ actress”

Meryl Streep has hit back at Donald Trump in her first public speech since he openly dissed her on Twitter after she slammed him during the Golden Globes for mocking a disabled reporter in public.

In response, Trump tweeted that the Oscar-winning actress was 'one of the most overrated in Hollywood'.

Last night (February 11), Streep was speaking at a fundraiser for the Human Rights Campaign 2017 Greater New York Gala Dinner. She was present to accept the organization’s Ally for Equality Award, which recognizes the efforts of those who lend their voice to help the LGBTQ community.

The highly acclaimed actress delivered a speech which strongly defended LGBTQ, civil and women’s rights.

"'Evil prospers when good men do nothing'… ain’t that the truth," she said. “We shouldn’t be surprised that fundamentalists, of all stripes, everywhere, are exercised and fuming. We shouldn’t be surprised that these profound changes come at a much steeper cost than it seems would lie true in the 20th century.

“We’re not going to go back to the bad old days of ignorance and oppression and hiding who we are.

“We owe it to the people who have died for our rights, and who have died before they even got their own.

“If we live through this precarious moment – if (Trump’s) catastrophic instinct to retaliate doesn’t lead us to nuclear winter – we will have much to thank our current leader for. He will have woken us up to how fragile freedom is.

As with her Golden Globes speech, Streep declined to mention Trump by name but did reference him by saying:

“I am the most ‘overrated’ and most over-decorated and currently, over-berated actress… of my generation,” which was met by huge cheers from the audience.
