Carl Barât reveals Pete Doherty's "childish revenge"

Carl Barât has spoken out about his turbulent relationship with Libertines band member Pete Doherty, labelling the currently imprisoned star's behaviour "childish revenge".

Talking particularly about the atmosphere between the pair during their set at Reading Festival a few years ago, Barât explained that although they had mended the seemingly broken bridges it didn't take long for things to spiral back out of control:

"Yeah, it was physical. But it's not something I've talked about, or something that I want to talk about 'cause it upsets me. Suffice to say I wasn't happy about it."

"It's more like childish revenge - "now I'll show you for going on Top Of The Pops without me" [as Barât did in the summer of 2004]. It was upsetting. But I was prepared to counter that with a tsunami of love."

He also expressed that although he "dabbled" in the lifestyle that has seriously affected Doherty, he knew when to stop:

"My stepdad's brother died of it (heroin) when I was about 16. And I sort of looked into it and realised that it actually is just the start of a very boring book, with only two endings - death or lifelong shit. It did make alarm bells go off, when those things were around. I mean, I dabbled, but I knew when to stop."

Although Doherty is currently serving a prison sentence for cocaine possession, his turbulent relationship with Barât remains an important one:

"If you love someone, you love someone. No matter how much you can hate them too. No matter how much he does to upset me… I'd gladly go and see him. I'd go with optimism. And I'd do what I can as a friend. I've got a lot of mates but only a few very dear ones. And Peter's one of them."
