Amy Winehouse joins the 27 Club

Amy Winehouse is the latest world-renowned musician to join the infamous 27 Club.

The 27 Club is the name given to the group of legendary musicians who have all died at the age of 27.

The “club” started after Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones, Jimi Hendricks and Janis Jopin all died at aged 27 during 1969 and 1970. Doors frontman Jim Morrison was added to that list a year later and died from heart failure while living in Paris. Kurt Cobain, former lead singer of Nirvana, was added to the list in 1994.

Amy Winehouse was found dead at her flat in Camden in north London by police after a call was made to emergency services yesterday (July 23) afternoon.

The official police statement is that there is no suspected foul play and investigations are still ongoing.

Cobain and Hendrix biographer Charles R. Cross wrote, "The number of musicians who died at 27 is truly remarkable by any standard. [Although] humans die regularly at all ages, there is a statistical spike for musicians who die at 27.”
