One Direction score highest debut U.S. single by a UK act since '98

One Direction have earned themselves the accolade of having the highest charting debut U.S. single from a British act in 14 years. 

The lads released 'What Makes You Beautiful', for which they won Best British Single at the 2012 BRIT Awards on February 21, in America recently and it has entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No.28 making it the most popular debut single by an act from the UK since 1998. 

Billboard.com explains that it shifted 132,000 downloads in its first week and began its chart journey at No.12 on the Digital Songs run down. 

The former X Factor finalists have been laying down the groundwork to build a significant fanbase in the USA this year and are about to begin a full tour in the country in support of Big Time Rush, they recently filmed a cameo on iCarly and will also appear on The Today Show in March
