Katy Perry describes new video as 'affirmation of strength'

Katy Perry has described her new video for 'Part Of Me' as an ‘affirmation of strength.’

The military-themed four minute promo for the song, which debuted earlier today, shows the 27-year-old cutting off her long hair, leaving her small-town roots and becoming a marine to escape the heartbreak over a cheating lover.

Directed by Ben Mor and filmed over several days at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California, Perry told MTV News that she really enjoyed the shoot:

“Well, I think that everybody can see that I love to take chances with my videos, and also have a lot of fun.

“It's an affirmation of strength, so I wanted to go the strongest route I ever could. Literally, I was like, "I'm gonna join the service. I'm gonna join the Marines."'

The 'California Gurls' star, currently number one in the UK midweeks with the track, also revealed that she threw herself into the boot camp experience:

“We used only Marines. ... For three days, I was a wannabe Marine, which was so difficult. Those people work hard and work out.

“I learned how to flip someone. I learned how to flip them on their back. I learned how to wrestle underwater. I just love it and I think people really respond to it. People can catch the BS ... and I just wanted to really go for it.”
