One Direction: "Simon Cowell pays us in jelly beans"

One Direction have joked that their mentor Simon Cowell pays them in jelly beans because he is so tight with money.

Cowell was the mastermind behind the global success story after helping piece them together from five solo contestants on the X Factor.

However, the Sun quotes band member Niall Horan as saying that Cowell is so successful at what he does because he is a bit "tight". He said:

"Simon Cowell is tight. That's why he's so successful - he's able to keep his money to himself. We’re paid in jelly beans."

The newspaper meanwhile quotes Harry Styles as saying that the band are constantly writing lyrics on the road and that they want their music to come from them, not some "40-year-old man in an office". He said:

"We're always writing on the road and in hotels and airports. We don't ever want our music to sound like a 40-year-old man in an office has written it and given it to us to perform."
