Pete Doherty acting debut panned by critics

Pete Doherty’s acting skills have been panned by critics following the premiere of his debut film in Cannes earlier today.

The 33-year-old rocker appears as Octave, a libertine who suffers from depression after his mistress betrays him, in period drama Confession of a Child of the Century alongside the likes of Lily Cole and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

However, the initial reaction to his first big-screen role was less than complimentary, with Cine-Vue comparing his performance to a “a sixth former who hasn't learnt his lines for drama class,” while the BBC claimed “it is difficult to recall a less charismatic lead performance in any other film.”

Screen Daily were also less than convinced, posting: "With a more or less permanently bored expression, Doherty looks like he'd rather be somewhere else; he only really comes alive in a few passages of what look like improvised laddish dialogue."

The adaptation of Alfred de Musset’s 19th century novel will open in France in September but is yet to secure a release date in the UK.
