The success of Adam Lambert's sophomore album 'Trespassing' has helped Sony make strides on Universal in the US record label stakes.

Music Week reports that following Lambert's US No.1 album, Universal's market share in America has dropped, strengthening Sony's position.

They say that Universal's market share has lessened by 1.2% this year - meaning that their share is currently sitting at 30.4%, whilst Sony's is 29.2%.

Last year, Sony were 2.8% behind Universal, whilst in 2010 they were trailing by 5.2%.

Sony have recently overseen US releases such as 'Up All Night' and '21' by One Direction and Adele respectively.

Speaking about the label's 2012 success, a Sony spokesperson said:

"We are thrilled with the success we are seeing so far this year."
