Friendly Fires frontman hints at new side project

Friendly Fires frontman Ed Macfarlane has revealed that he is heading back into the studio for a possible side project.

The 'Hawaiian Air' singer, who was speaking ahead of tonight’s main stage performance at Rockness, told The Daily Record that he’s planning to record new material which will be a departure from the band’s usual fare:

“I’ll be laying down some music that may or may not be Friendly Fires material. If it is a 12-minute long krautrock jam, it might not be sensible to call it a Friendly Fires song.

“I just think that it might be cheating fans of our music a little bit. I didn’t like it when MGMT did this electronic sounding pop debut record, then they did this second record that sounded completely different. I felt they should have done that under a different name. I don’t want to damage the identity of what Friendly Fires is about."

However, Macfarlane also added that the band still want to adopt a different approach for their third studio album: “Now, to progress as musicians it is right we don’t repeat ourselves. It can induce a headache if you listen to too much really bright sounding music.

“I like music that feels more real. When I hear a new band I can hear a drummer in there somewhere, but it has been beefed up with so much electronics and samples that I think what’s the point of having a drummer there in the first place.

“With our new material, we have strict rules we are not going to sample any of the drums or fall into production tricks I feel I have had to stick by in the past.”
