Mary J. Blige apologises for 'offensive' Burger King commercial, says she was 'heartbroken' by reaction

Superstar Mary J. Blige has apologised to her fans for the controversial Burger King commercial she filmed and then pulled from the campaign soon after it was unveiled.

Speaking to New York's Hot 97 radio station, she explained that she was heartbroken at how the advertisement was received after complaints were made against her for promoting a fried chicken meal and perpetuating offensive racial stereotypes.

Blige also confessed she expected the final edit to be "iconic" and was shocked at the public reaction:

"It just broke my heart. It was a mistake, but I did it because I thought it was something that wouldn’t come out like that. It was sold to us that I would be shot in an iconic way. I was looking for someone to have mercy, but no one had mercy. It was a learning experience."

"It hurt my feelings. It crushed me for like two days. I want to apologise to everyone that was offended or thought that I would do something so disrespectful to our culture... I thought I was doing something right, so forgive me."
