N-Dubz star Fazer reflects on tough upbringing

N-Dubz man Fazer has opened up on his tough upbringing and the problems he had getting his life moving.

The rapper grew up in North London in an area of Camden that he says was "very drug-infested" when he was growing up.

Whilst Fazer may be enjoying the fruits of a decent career at the moment, it was anything but when he was a teenager.

Speaking to The Metro, Fazer said that money was tight in his family and as a result, he had to search for work - something that wasn't forthcoming. The rapper said:

"My mum used to clean toilets and my dad used to put up market stalls on the weekend. We grew up on next to nothing. My mum started giving me a couple of quid here and there when I turned 16 so I kind of had to find other ways to make money. I'm not going to candy coat it and say that I was an angel because, coming where I come from in Camden, it's not a sunny walk. It's very drug-infested."

Fazer continued: "There's a lot of drug abuse going on. Growing up around that you get influenced into things to try and earn money. I tried to get jobs before and I'd turn up in a brand new tracksuit and I'd think I'd look great and there were people in there in suits and stuff and I was feeling out of place. The guy would be like, 'We're not hiring no more' and I'd be like, 'But there's still people waiting outside'. So I'd be like, 'What can I do to get me a job?'. My mum's not giving me money any more. I need to start doing other stuff. I was influenced by street life from a young age but thank God that people supported my music."
