X Factor to be investigated over 'Lady Gaga' audition

The UK X Factor is to be investigated by Ofcom over an audition that saw a mother perform the Lady Gaga song 'The Edge of Glory', reports the BBC.

51-year-old single mother Alison Brunton performed the track earlier this year as the X Factor toured the country during its audition stage.

The cringe-worthy performance was panned by the judges and Brunton was told to stop singing early.

She had, however, brought her two children - aged 14 and 16 - who were watching backstage and featured on the show looking somewhat embarrassed by their mother.

Broadcasting guidelines state that under-18s must not be "caused unnecessary distress or anxiety by their involvement in programmes" and as a result, industry watchdog Ofcom are investigating the episode, which was shown recently.

A spokeswoman for the ITV series said: "The X Factor does not include child contestants but takes the welfare of any children featured in the show very seriously. It is a well-established format and contestants regularly bring along their family to support them, as Alison did. Footage of family members is only used when appropriate consent has been obtained."

X Factor meanwhile is also being investigated over a Britney Spears impersonator whose saucy audition saw her sit on the lap of judge Louis Walsh.
