Pussy Riot member freed from jail

One member of controversial Russian punk band Pussy Riot has been freed from prison.

30-year-old Yekaterina Samutsevich today (October 10) had her two-year sentence overturned on appeal.

As previously reported, three members of Pussy Riot were jailed for two years each after being found guilty of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.

In February, the band protested in a cathedral in opposition to the Russian Orthodox Church leader's support of President Vladimir Putin.

Samutsevich's lawyer argued that their client was already thrown out of the cathedral before she could open her guitar case and play their music.

Pussy Riot have received support from around the world since falling foul of Russian law, with the likes of Madonna paying tribute to their cause.
