Nirvana's smashed 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' bass to be auctioned

The bass guitar smashed up during the video shoot for Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' video will go under the hammer next month in London.

The instrument, which is a 1960s Japanese Zen-On bass, was played by Krist Novoselic and smashed by the iconic band's late frontman Kurt Cobain, and was taken from the set by an enthusiastic extra who expected it to have been destroyed anyway.

It is due to go for auction at the world-famous Christie's in London on November 29 and is expected to fetch between $24,000 and $40,000 despite being an inexpensive bass that Novoselic purchased from a pawn shop with the intention of destroying it on-camera.
