Lady Gaga fans have come out in force after Madonna said that her audience is better.

The pair have endured a somewhat rocky relationship over the past couple of years after Madonna claimed Gaga's 2011 hit 'Born This Way' sounded similar to her own 'Express Yourself'.

The Queen of Pop has regularly taken shots at Gaga both on stage and in interviews, and on Sunday (November 4) at a gig in Minnesota, she said that her fans were better than Gaga's.

Video footage shows Madonna saying: "I have the best fans in the whole world. So take that, Lady Gaga! You know, I invited her on stage to sing with me. But, she turned me down. It's okay. I've been rejected before, it builds a little character."

This provoked an angry response from Gaga fans, with one YouTube user commenting: "This shows the importance Gaga has today. Madonna has now become just another star trying to be as popular and as great as she (Gaga) is."
