Tristan Prettyman on splitting from Jason Mraz: 'It was cathartic to write songs about it'

Singer-songwriter Tristan Prettyman recently spoke to 97.9 WRMF in West Palm Beach, Florida about dealing with the break-up of her engagement to Jason Mraz as a musician.

The brown-haired beauty explained that she decided to be true to herself by writing honestly about her personal life and penned the emotionally driven tracks ‘Say Anything’ and ‘I Was Gonna Marry You’ about the painful split from the 'I Won't Give Up' star.

Referring specifically to 'I Was Gonna Marry You', Prettyman said: "That song was written because I didn’t have an outlet at the time. I didn’t have a record. The record wasn’t out yet. I didn’t want to blog about it. I didn’t want to react to it."

"I went to my friend Dave Hodges house the next day to write and I literally was so ‘What the F!’ and I was like I want to write a song ‘I Was Gonna Marry You’, and Dave and Steve, who was writing with us at the time, looked at me and were like, ‘Are you sure you want to go there?’ I was like, ‘Yes! Why am I beating around the bush?’”

She added that her 9-year relationship with Mraz seemed almost alien to her after he spilled intimate details of their break-up to a reporter on a red carpet:

"We weren’t gonna make a public press release and then he one night felt the need to be on the red carpet and just spill the whole story to someone and called me and said ‘I just want to tell you I gave the whole story to so and so reporter’. I was like, ‘Okay, what happened to the talk we just had a week ago?’ I had a moment like wow, I’ve been in a relationship with someone for nine years and I don’t really even know them, or what they’re capable of.”
